Kashmir opposition demands release of prisoners
August 25th, 2011 - 5:31 pm ICT by IANSSrinagar, Aug 25 (IANS) Opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Thursday demanded release of all political prisoners and youths in deference to the forthcoming holy Muslim festival of Eid-ul-Fitr.
“The government has released only 12 prisoners (two days ago) while around 1,200 are still being detained. We demand all of them be released,” said PDP President Mehbooba Mufti while leading a march here.
The “draconian” Public Safety Act, which gives sweeping powers to the state, “must be repealed”, Mufti said.
A commission should be constituted to probe the unmarked graves, she said, referring to the state human rights commission’s report of 2,156 unidentified bodies being buried in the Valley.
She also alleged that the arrest of youths was still continuing in the Valley.
