Yousuf Raza Gilani Islamabad, Nov 29 (IANS) Afghan President Hamid Karzai Tuesday telephoned Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and condoled the death of 24 Pakistani soldiers in a NATO air attack.

NATO fighter jets and helicopters bombed two border posts in Mohmand region near the Afghan border Saturday.

Gilani earlier said there could not be “business as usual” with the US after the NATO air strike.

Pakistan’s relationship with the US can only continue with mutual respect and mutual interest, the Associated Press of Pakistan reported Gilani as saying.

“If I can’t protect the sovereignty of my country, how we can say it is mutual respect and mutual interest. You cannot win any war without support of the masses. We need the people with us and such sort of incidents are making people moving away,” Gilani was quoted as saying by CNN.

After Saturday’s attack, Pakistan closed NATO supply lines through its territory to Afghanistan and ordered the US to vacate the Shamsi air base in Balochistan province.
