Karnataka celebrates Republic Day

Bangalore, Jan 26 (IANS) Karnataka Governor Hans Raj Bhardwaj Thursday hoisted the tricolour to mark the 63rd Republic Day at the Field Marshal Manekshaw Ground here amid tight security.

Clad in dark blue suite and sporting a rose in the pocket, Bhardwaj took salute and inspected the guard of honour by going round the ground atop an open jeep amidst cheers and thunderous applause by about 8,000 people who had gathered on a bright sunny and breezy day under a clear sky.

Thousands of rose petals were showered from a flying helicopter when the governor unfurled the flag. The national anthem was then played, followed by patriotic songs.

Contingents of the army, navy and air force led the march past followed by battalions of the Karnataka State Reserve Police, Rapid Action Force and the Central Industrial Security Force.

National Cadet Corps and boys and girls from Bharat Scouts & Guides also participated in the ceremonial parade.

The governor also addressed the gathering on the occasion in English, which was telecast live by the state unit of Doordarshan.

Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda, some of his cabinet colleagues and senior officials were present on the occasion.
