Kamat denies offshore bank accounts
August 24th, 2011 - 9:10 pm ICT by IANSPanaji, Aug 24 (IANS) Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat Wednesday rejected reports that he had black money stashed away in banks and tax havens abroad.
Kamat also said that he was supportive of Anna Hazare’s crusade against corruption, stating that he would support any movement against graft.
“There are reports on internet which say that I have money in banks in China and other countries. I want to say that I do not have any money abroad,” Kamat said, two days after India Against Corruption (IAC) crusaders besieged his official residence.
Last week, an online portal based in Goa claimed that Kamat and many other cabinet ministers had parked their money in banks and offshore havens across the globe. The website www.goachronicle.com also named the other cabinet ministers and the banks in which the money was stashed, claiming sources and documents.
“I will ask my cabinet ministers about these reports too. I will tell them to clarify to the media there is nothing like this,” Kamat added.
Commenting on Hazare’s agitation for the Jan Lokpal bill, Kamat said: “Anything against corruption is always welcome. I hope things will be sorted out in Delhi (between the Jan Lokpal bill campaigners and the central government).”
