Kalmadi in no mood to resign as IOA president
January 20th, 2012 - 7:20 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )New Delhi, Jan 20 (IANS) Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president Suresh Kalmadi, who was freed on bail Thursday after nine months in jail, is in no mood either to resign or re-assume his charge and has asked acting president Vijay Kumar Malhotra to continue in his prolonged absence.
In a letter to Malhotra Friday, Kalmadi said that a long legal battle and parliamentary commitments will keep him away from the IOA for a long time.
“I will not be able to represent the IOA. I will not be taking part in IOA activities for a long time,” Kalmadi wrote in his letter.
IOA vice-president Tarlochan Singh told IANS that Kalmadi, who is a parliament member from Pune, has not resigned and will stay away from the daily proceedings of the IOA.
“Kalmadi’s legal battle and his parliamentary commitments will keep him away from the IOA for some time. So, Kalmadi requested Malhotra to continue as the acting president,” said Tarlochan.
Tarlochan said: “Kalmadi is still the IOA president. There has been no motion against him and he will continue as the IOA president. Malhotra will just work as acting president, as he has been doing, since his (Kalmadi’s) arrest.”
Kalmadi, chief of the New Delhi Commonwealth Games organising committee, and then director general V.K. Verma were granted bail by the Delhi High Court Thursday after nine months in jail.
Kalmadi was arrested by the CBI April 26 while Verma was arrested Feb 23, 2011, for alleged scam in the Timing, Scoring and Result system contract related to the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
Besides Kalmadi and Verma, nine others have been arrested for their alleged role in awarding the contract for installing the Timing-Scoring-Result system to Swiss Times Omega at an exorbitant cost of Rs.141 crore, which is said have entailed a loss of over Rs.95 crore to the public exchequer.
