Kalmadi gets bail but Raja, several VIPs still in Tihar
January 19th, 2012 - 9:01 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Jan 19 (IANS) Though former Commonwealth Games Organising Committee chief Suresh Kalmadi Thursday got bail after spending nine months in Tihar Jail, a number of high-profile officials continue to be behind bars in the Commonwealth Games and 2G spectrum scams.
A. Raja: Former communications and IT minister had allegedly manipulated procedures in allocation of 2G spectrum, resulting in losses to the national exchequer. The DMK MP is in Tihar since February 2011.
Sidharth Behura: Telecom secretary during A. Raja’s tenure as the communications and IT minister, he too has been in jail since February 2011. Behura is among the main accused in the 2G case.
Lalit Bhanot: The former Commonwealth Games (CWG) Organising Committee (OC) secretary general was lodged in the jail in February last year for a corruption case related to the 2010 mega sporting event.
A.S.V. Prasad: The joint director general (sport) of the Commonwealth games OC was arrested April 25, 2011, for allegedly awarding a contract to a Swiss firm for Timing-Scoring-Result (TSR) system for the mega sporting event in 2010, causing a loss of Rs.95 crore to the exchequer.
Surjit Lal: The deputy director general (procurement) of CWG OC was also arrested April 25, 2011, by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
A.K. Reddy: The promoter of a Hyderabad-based firm, he was wanted by the CBI for his alleged involvement in award of a lucrative CWG contract to a Swiss firm at inflated rates. He surrendered to a Delhi court and was sent to Tihar in April 2011.
A.K. Madan: Promoter of Faridabad-based firm Gem International. He was on the run since February and surrendered before the court Aug 16, 2011.
P.D. Arya: Purushottam Dev Arya, also a promoter of the Faridabad-based firm Gem International. He too was on the run since February last year and surrendered Aug 16, 2011.
