New Delhi, April 26 (IANS) The man who hurled a slipper at former Commonwealth Games Organising Committee chief Suresh Kalmadi Tuesday at the Patiala House court complex here was “frustrated and livid with his corrupt practices” and decided to humiliate him, according to the police.

The attacker, Manoj Sharma, was using a fake name Kapil Thakur to hide his identity. He is from Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh and is married with three children.

The 42-year-old came to Delhi a week ago to visit his mother and younger brother in east Delhi’s Geeta Colony.

“As he watched the news of Kalmadi being produced in Patiala House court complex, he could not hold back and reached the spot to attack him,” a police officer said.

Kalmadi was walking towards the court complex when Sharma first tried to break the police cordon, and when he failed, chucked a slipper at kalmadi.

“No case has been registered against him and he was detained at the Tilak Marg police station (in central Delhi), where he was questioned. After that, he was released,” the police officer said.

“Sharma was earlier a lawyer in Gwalior. However, the bar council in Gwalior cancelled his licence after he tried to stab a sub-divisional magistrate there,” the officer added.

Sharma is presently working for a Gwalior-based weekly journal ‘Sansad Garjana’.

Kalmadi was arrested Monday for alleged conspiracy to favour a private timing device firm in Switzerland for the October 2010 Commonwealth Games.
