New Delhi, Aug 18 (IANS) The Rajya Sabha Thursday passed a motion asking President Pratibha Patil to remove Justice Soumitra Sen of the Calcutta High Court. Here are the facts of the case.
The charges:
Misappropriation of Rs.24 lakh in the 1990s while appointed receiver by the high court and misrepresentation of facts, thus constituting misbehaviour.
The motion in Rajya Sabha:
After a six-hour debate over two days, Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari Thursday put the motion, introduced by Communist Party of India-Marxist member Sitaram Yechury, to vote in which 189 voted in favour and 17 against.
What next?
The motion to impeach Justice Sen will now go to the Lok Sabha. It would have to be passed by a two-thirds majority in the lower house of parliament in the ongoing monsoon session. If the motion gets through the lower house, it would go to President Patil.
