July 1st, 2011 - 12:12 am ICT by IANSNew Delhi, June 30 (IANS) There is a need to tackle natural disasters, which affect everyone, - poor or rich - in a collective manner, an official of India’s disaster management panel said Thursday.
Addressing a gathering of representatives from non-governmental organisation, business houses and the government, National Disaster Management Authority vice chairman Shashidhar Reddy stressed the need to manage the natural disasters on the ground level.
He was speaking at the Smanvay, a national symposium on disaster management here.
“We have to now focus specially on long term preparedness and mitigation measures for effectively dealing with disasters on whose occurrences we usually do not have any control,” said Reddy.
In his address, Nandan Maluste, president of CSO Partners which organised the event, said: “India is one of the most hazard prone areas of the world. Whether it is a catastrophic earthquake in Bhuj, or Tsunami or Kosi floods, natural disasters affect every body from large business houses to poor people,” said
CSO’s CEO Soumitra Ghosh said that NGOs and business sector can play a vital role in addressing the concern of disaster management.
CSO is a non-profit organisation which provides financial and human support services for civil society organisations.
