New Delhi, Jan 12 (IANS) Angered at a girl rejecting his marriage proposal, a man in his 30s killed the 19-year-old and critically injured her younger sister when she came to intervene in south Delhi’s Mahipalpur slum area Thursday morning, said police.

The dead girl has been identified as Anita, resident of Mahipalpur slum area and her sister as Kavita.

“Anita was found dead near her critically injured younger sister, Kavita, 18, around 11 a.m. Thursday in Kusumpur Pahari area of Vasant Kunj in south Delhi,” said a police official.

Anita’s body has been sent for postmortem while Kavita is admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) trauma centre. “Kavita’s condition is stated to be critical,” said the official.

The sisters were attacked with a sharp edged weapon when they were going for work as their lunch boxes were recovered from the site.

The accused, identified as Rajesh in his early 30s, also resides in Mahipalpur slum area. He has been arrested.

A passerby made a PCR call after finding the victims unconscious. “On the basis of the information by the sister’s father, Mata Singh, who works as a gardener, the accused was apprehended,” said the official.

Interrogation of Rajesh revealed that he had fallen in love with Anita and wanted to marry her. “A few days ago he proposed to Anita but she refused. He was forcing her to marry him. Her continuous refusal enraged the accused and he attacked Anita with a sharp-edged object after finding her in a secluded place. Kavita received critical injuries while resisting the attack,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Chhaya Sharma.
