Mumbai, April 4 (IANS) A 19-year-old girl here conspired with friends to throw acid on a youth she loved after he broke up with her, police said Friday, solving a three-month-long case. Gwendoline Noronha, a student of St. Andrews College, Bandra, convinced her friends Saby Abraham and Keyur Parmar to throw acid on Vivek Patel, her college mate whom she loved, said Rakesh Maria, joint police commissioner (crime).

Saby and Keyur were arrested Friday, he said. Apprehending arrest, Gwendoline has secured anticipatory bail, which the police will challenge, Maria added.

Vivek’s friend Jitesh was also injured in the incident that occurred on the night of Dec 28, 2007, he said.

Gwendoline was in love with Vivek. But due to objections from his cousin, Vivek broke off with her. Stung by his rejection, Gwendoline decided to teach him a lesson and sought Saby and Keyur’s help, Maria said.

Gwendoline told Saby that Vivek had raped her and then refused to marry her. Saby, who was apparently secretly in love with her, immediately agreed to join the conspiracy and roped in Keyur, the police officer revealed.

Keyur, a student from Ahmedabad, bought a bottle of acid, which they threw on Vivek. The youth was admitted to the intensive care unit of Bhatia Hospital, south Mumbai.

“This is not a Bollywood story, but an indication of where our young generation is heading to,” Maria remarked.
