Ranchi, March 10 (IANS) Jharkhand Speaker C.P. Singh barred media from reporting a disruption in the assembly Thursday, inviting a sharp reaction from the opposition.

The proceedings of the assembly were disrupted over the arrest of former chief minister and Jharkhand Vikas Morcha-Prajatantrik (JVM-P) president Babulal Marandi.

Marandi was arrested late Wednesday from Silli, situated on the outskirts of Ranchi, while enforcing his party’s two-day economic blockade in which party workers disrupted the road and rail services in the state.

When the house proceedings began at 11 a.m., JVM-P legislators came near the speaker’s podium, seeking release of their leader. The Congress backed the JVM-P demand. The speaker adjourned the house till noon.

Before adjourning the house, the speaker asked the video cameraman to stop recording the disruption and said: “This will also not be published in media.”

“Preventing the media from covering the disruption is not proper,” said Vinod Singh, a Communist Party of India-Marxist-Leninist legislator, when the house proceedings resumed after noon.

Apart from Marandi, JVM-P legislature party leader Pradeep Yadav and 200 supporters were also arrested during the blockade. They have been kept in Ranchi’s Angada police station.

The economic blockade was called by the party to demand that the entire state be declared famine-hit.
