Ranchi, May 4 (IANS) Mistakes and miscalculations led to the killing of 11 security personnel in a Maoist ambush, Jharkhand Police Wednesday admitted and said the incident would be probed.

“There were intelligence inputs on Maoists’ presence in the area. What went wrong will be probed. Right now I cannot blame anyone,” Jharkhand’s Director General of Police G.S. Rath told reporters here.

In Tuesday’s gunbattle, which lasted nearly five hours in Dhardhariya jungle near Senha in Lohardagga district, 11 security personnel, eight of them from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and three from the state police, were killed and over 50 injured.

Six security personnel, including four CRPF men, were killed on the spot while five others died while undergoing treatment in hospital.

“It was trap and our men fell in it,” said the DGP.

Jharkhand special branch had prior information of the presence of Maoists in the area since April 25. The state police were informed and an operation was planned based on the special branch feedback.

Police sources said the operation was led by sub-inspector rank officials and not by seniors. Major offensives are usually led by officers in the rank of superintendent of police (SP) or deputy superintendent (Dy SP).

The role of Lohardagga SP A. Minz is also under scanner, according to sources.

Minz went to the ambush site only three hours after the attack, sources said.

CRPF Director General K. Vijay Kumar visited the injured policemen in a Ranchi hospital Wednesday.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Arjun Munda and senior police officials Wednesday paid homage to the killed CRPF men at a CRPF camp in Ranchi.
