JD-U rebels seek compensation for police firing victims
June 23rd, 2011 - 9:34 pm ICT by IANSPatna, June 23 (IANS) The Bihar Nav Nirman Manch, a newly formed outfit of dissidents in Bihar’s ruling Janata Dal-United (JD-U), Thursday criticised Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for not announcing any compensation for the people killed in police firing in the state earlier this month.
A team of rebel leaders visited Bhajanpura village near Forbesganj in Araria district, about 350 km from here, where the police June 3 fired at villagers protesting against an upcoming factory.
Four people, including a pregnant woman and a six-month-old baby, were killed while nine others were injured.
“We demand that the state government immediately announce compensation for the victims, who are the poorest of the poor,” Arun Kumar, a former JD-U MP and Manch leader, told IANS on the phone from Bhajanpura.
Arun Kumar said that it was revealing that a chief minister who claims to provide “sushasan” (good governance), failed to announce any compensation.
“It has exposed Nitish Kumar’s double standards towards Muslims, as all the victims were Muslims,” Kumar said.
Manch convenor Upendra Kushwaha said that it was unfortunate that no action was taken against the errant police officers.
“The government should file a case against the police officers… If it fails to do so, the Manch will not sit silent,” he said.
