Japanese PM to resign

Tokyo, Sep 1 (Xinhua) Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda Monday announced his decision to resign. At a hastily-summoned press conference at his official residence, Fukuda said he was taking the step in view of the opposition to many of his policies.

Fukuda was elected president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and assumed office in September last year.
