Jan Shatabdi to run till Una in Himachal Pradesh
December 12th, 2008 - 8:23 pm ICT by IANSDharamsala, Dec 12 (IANS) Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal Friday informed the Vidhan Sabha (the state assembly) that the run of the Delhi-Nangal Jan Shatabdi train would be extended till Una town in the hill state from Dec 14.”The Railways have decided to extend the Delhi-Nangal Jan Shatabdi train’s run till Una. The first train till Una will run from Dec 14,” Dhumal said on the second day of the winter session of the state assembly.
“We were in constant touch with (Railway Minister) Laloo Prasad Yadav and the central government for extending the train up to Una,” he said.
Una is a gateway to the hill state, especially Kangra district, and is located 40 km from Punjab’s Nangal town.
The decision to extend the train till Una will give a major economic boost to Una, Kangra, Hamirpur and Bilaspur districts.
The rail link will also be extended from Chandigarh to Baddi, an industrial town in the hill state. Additionally, a pre-feasibility study for a rail link to Leh in Jammu and Kashmir via the Rohtang Pass in Himachal’s Kullu district has also been approved.
The 460-km Manali-Leh railway line would provide an all-weather connectivity to tribal areas of both Himachal and Jammu and Kashmir that remain cut off for over eight months a year.
The rail line would also play an important role in the movement of armed personnel, their equipment and essential commodities to border areas that are close to Pakistan and China.
