Jaitley confident of mid-term poll prospects

New Delhi, Sep 27 (IANS) With the Congress struggling to handle the 2G controversy, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Arun Jaitley Tuesday said if mid-term elections are held now, then his party would be in a favourable position.
“Mid-term elections occur at the loss of majority, when numbers are less… I can’t say at this moment, but situation suits BJP,” Jaitley said during an interaction with Indian Women Press Corps.
Speaking on the finance ministry’s note on the 2G issue which names Home Minister P. Chidambaram, he said: “Chidambaram’s issue has disturbed the internal dynamics of government and they look disturbed and with this internal dynamics, to cover the full distance (five-year term) is a difficult challenge.”
“It indicates distrust and weakening of central authority when colleagues behave in this manner. These kind of events take place before the cracking of a raj,” he added.
He said the situation for Congress is “very critical” and the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) was facing multiple problems.
“First, the government is facing crisis of credibility and secondly, leadership is a problem. During UPA-I, the country wanted to give the prime minister a fair chance. In UPA-II, the seriousness of each of the issues was realised. This has led to certain collapse in credibility,” he pointed out.
“The new system which is in place in the UPA, the prime minister is the CEO, while the real power lies with the board of directors. This model is fit for the corporates, but not for a government. The prime minister has to be the natural leader of the government and country. People look somewhere else for making decision and in this process the decision making suffers,” he said.
When asked about the role of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the 2G issue, he said: “Ab baat nikli hai to door talak jayegi (Now that the issue has been raised, it will go on for long).”
