New Delhi, July 8 (IANS) Union Petroleum Minister S. Jaipal Reddy met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Friday and called for steps to resolve the impasse over creation of a new state of Telangana from Andhra Pradesh.
Sources said Reddy, who was with the prime minister for over 30 minutes, apprised him of political developments in Andhra Pradesh in the wake of resignation of about 100 legislators and 15 MPs from Telangana region in support of their demand for a separate state.
Reddy, who is an MP from Chelvella Lok Sabha seat in Telangana region, pressed for an early decision to resolve the impasse and said there was a groundswell of support in the region for creation of a new state.
Reddy’s meeting with Manmohan Singh came amid intensification of the agitation for a new state. Students Thursday took out rallies in different parts of Telangana in support of their demand.
Reddy is the only MP from Telangana region who is a cabinet minister in the union government.
