Lucknow, July 24(IANS) Jailed Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) legislator Shribhagwan Verma alias Guddu Pandit and five policemen who were escorting him, were injured in a road accident near Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, a police official said Thursday. Pandit, escorted by over a dozen policemen, was returning after a hearing at the Kasganj district court late Wednesday night when their vehicle hit a road divider on the outskirts of Kanpur, 90 km from here.

Pandit was arrested from Noida June 22 following a research scholar’s allegation that the legislator had exploited her physically and mentally for the past couple of years.

“He (Pandit) came here for the hearing of the case lodged by the complainant under sections of rape, intimidation and fraud and left from here around 4 p.m.,” Superintendent of Police Kasganj Luv Kumar told IANS on phone.

The injured were admitted in two separate hospitals. They have not suffered critical injuries.

Lodged in the Etah jail after his arrest, Pandit was later shifted to the Kanpur district jail. “Pandit had then complained of heart ailment. As a heart specialist was not available here, he was shifted to Kanpur,” Kumar said.
