ITF Juniors: Three seeds upset on opening day

Kolkata, Jan 19 (IANS) Boys’ fourth seed Appanervanda Muddappa and sixth seed Uzbek Roman Piftor went down to lower ranked Indian opponents in the opening round of the ONGC ITF Junior Tennis tournament being played here Monday.While wild card Venkat Iyer axed compatriot Muddappa 7-5, 6-2, Jayaprakash Mohit Mayur disposed off Roman 6-4,6-2 on the first day of the main draw at the DKS Sports Complex.

In the girls’ singles, the only seed to bow out was third ranked Rishika Sunkara, who lost to Prerna Bhambri in three sets 6-4, 4-6 and 4-6.

Local boy Bibaswan Deb and city girl Treta Bhattacharyya made it to the pre quarter finals by carving out contrasting wins over their rivals.

Treta took 115 minutes to defeat Russia’s Natela Dzalamidze 4-6,7-5,6-3, while Bibaswan got past Rohit Bisht in straight sets 6-3,7-6(7-5) after a 90-minute fight.
