ITBP’s first chief Bisweswar Chatterjee dead
October 10th, 2010 - 5:59 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Oct 10 (IANS) Bisweswar Chatterjee, the first chief of the paramilitary Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), died at his residence here Sunday morning following a brief illness. He was 95.
He is survived by three sons and three daughters.
“Chatterjee was first inspector general of the ITBP as there was no post of director general sanctioned in the force in its initial years,” an ITBP statement said.
He headed the ITBP for almost a decade since its inception in 1962. He devoted his time to social work after his retirement.
“He gave shape to ITBP which later emerged as an elite force of India. He selected all the border outposts and battalion locations of the ITBP keeping in view the tactical, strategic and administrative factors,” the statement said.
Chatterjee belonged to the 1940 batch of the Indian Police (IP), which was renamed the Indian Police Service (IPS) in 1947.
