Italian PM appoints new cabinet
November 16th, 2011 - 9:07 pm ICT by IANSRome, Nov 16 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Italy’s new Prime Minister Mario Monti introduced Wednesday the new members of his cabinet who would aim to reverse the country’s financial turmoil, the presidential palace said.
Monti, a former European Union commissioner, was appointed as prime minister Sunday after the resignation of 75-year-old Silvio Berlusconi.
Berlusconi stepped down after parliament approved new austerity measures demanded by the European Union to help trim Italy’s massive 1.9 trillion euro debt.
Monti, who will hold the post of the economic minister, said he was committed to restore stability in Italy and push for economic growth.
Berlusconi’s People of Freedom party has pledged its entire support to Monti’s government.
