Irish government to back its board on ICC snub
April 10th, 2011 - 9:04 pm ICT by IANSLondon, April 10 (IANS) The Irish government has promised to support Cricket Ireland’s campaign to reverse the International Cricket Council’s decision to shut the door on non-Test playing nations in the 2015 World Cup.
The decision, which was announced Monday, excludes any team outside the 10 cricketing nations from competing at a World Cup until 2019 and sparked fury among Irish players who expressed their anger over Twitter.
“Non-Test nations such as Ireland have played a major part in World Cups, not just by their talent and skill, but also by their commitment, passion and love of the game,” Ireland’s sports minister Leo Varadkar was quoted as saying in The Guardian.
“This ‘closed shop’ approach cannot be good for the game, and appears to fly in the face of the sacred values that cricket has espoused for so long - namely fair play, sportsmanship and camaraderie.”
Cricket Ireland, in consultation with the other 94 Associate and Affiliate nations, are considering all their options to try and overturn the decision.
Ireland had come up with an inspiring performance in this year’s World Cup, where they inflicted a shock three-wicket defeat on England.
