Paris, March 15 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Iran’s Bushehr nuclear facility is resistant to earthquakes, Russia, which helped build the plant, said Tuesday.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov made the remark as Japan is facing a nuclear disaster after a devastating magnitude-9 quake followed by tsunami hit the country Friday.

“(The Bushehr) project meets all safety requirements both as far as technology and seismic stability are concerned,” Lavrov told a meeting of the G8 foreign ministers in Paris.

Lavrov said the plant is under constant control of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Operation of the long-anticipated facility, built with Russian help last year, has been dogged by delays.

Japan’s Fukushima nuclear power plant has been damaged badly after a blast rocked its reactor No. 2 Tuesday morning, following similar explosions in reactors No. 1 and 3.
