Intoxicant tree juice kills four in Odisha
December 19th, 2011 - 10:50 pm ICT by IANSBhubaneswar, Dec 19 (IANS) At least four people died and five others fell ill after consuming intoxicating juice collected from a tree in Odisha’s Rayagada district, an official said.
A group of people had consumed the toddy-like intoxicant with meat during a ceremonial feast Friday night at Badakhilapdar village.
While two peoples died Monday, two persons died a day earlier, District Collector Nitin Bhanudas Jawale told IANS.
The condition of five others admitted to the district government hospital was stable, he said.
Jawale said the villagers said they had obtained the juice, locally known as ’salapa’, from one particular source which now appeared to be contaminated.
The situation is under control and there have been no further cases as such, he said, adding that all officers in the area have been instructed to monitor the situation closely.
Rayagada is 390 km from Bhubaneswar.
