Inter-state gang of snatchers busted in Chandigarh

Chandigarh, Jan 20 (IANS) Police Tuesday claimed they had busted an inter-state gang of thieves, active in the union territory of Chandigarh and in the neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana.”We arrested Sudhir Kumar (26) and Mohammad Mustafa (22) Monday night after a chase as they were speeding away in a white Maruti car after committing two snatching incidents in the region,” J.S. Khaira, deputy superintendent of police (south) told media persons here Tuesday evening.

At that time there were five miscreants in the car, but three of them managed to escape, he said.

Police arrested their third accomplice, Manga (20) Tuesday.

“With the arrests, we have solved many incidents of snatchings and robberies in the region that happened in the last few months. The gang was also active in the states of Punjab and Haryana and we are expecting a huge recovery from them,” said Khaira.

According to the police, Sudhir, who is the gang leader, is son of a retired inspector of Chandigarh police.

Khaira said the gang members used to follow their target for two to three days before attacking them at some lonely place in the night.

“All of them are drug addicts and also have past criminal records,” he said.
