Bhubaneswar, April 4 (IANS) The Orissa government Monday suspended a police inspector who allegedly misbehaved with a judge in the state’s Sundergarh district. A judicial probe has been ordered into the incident.

“This is an unfortunate incident. The government has decided to institute a judicial inquiry,” Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik told reporters here, adding that the police officer concerned has been placed under suspension with immediate effect.

According to the complaint of Judicial Magistrate (first class) Arun Patnaik, a police party picked him up Saturday night when he was in front of his official residence in Rourkela steel city, about 514 km from Bhubaneswar.

Though Patnaik identified himself, the local Uditnagar police station inspector allegedly beat him up and detained him at the police station for a few hours.

The matter came to light after Patnaik later lodged a complaint in the same police station against Inspector Sadananda Pujari and other policemen Sunday.

The incident triggered protests in the legal fraternity. Lawyers in several places, including in Rourkela, Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, Monday boycotted courts and staged protests.
