India’s Andaman military command completes a decade
October 9th, 2011 - 9:28 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Oct 9 (IANS) India’s Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC), a tri-services military formation based in Port Blair, has completed a decade of its existence and has over the few years become a “spring board” for India’s future military capabilities to protect the country’s strategic interests.
The ANC, commanded at present by Lt. Gen. N.C. Marwah, observed its 11th Raising Day Saturday, defence ministry officials based in Port Blair told IANS Sunday.
The formation was established in 2001 in the aftermath of the 1999 Kargil conflict against Pakistan and on the recommendations of the Group of Ministers, which considered the report of the Kargil review committee headed by strategic analyst and former defence secretary K. Subramanyam.
ANC was the first unified command of the army, navy, air force and coast guard set up by India. It also has another unified command in the Strategic Forces Command based in New Delhi that commands and controls India’s strategic assets, including nuclear weapon systems.
“Over the past ten years, the Andaman and Nicobar Command has achieved strategic coherence and a high level of operational efficiency, both in joint operations and in rescue and relief operations, in this South-Eastern frontier of the country,” an officer said.
“Increased surveillance efforts, welfare measures and promoting the Andaman as the springboard of India’s future policies have been the hallmark of ANC’s activities in the years gone by,” he added.
The 11th ANC Raising Day was marked by a ceremonial parade comprising platoons from all four components of the joint formation.
The parade also featured armoured personnel carriers and a flypast by Chetaks and Mi-8 helicopters and Dornier aircraft.
