Beijing, Aug 22 (IANS) India women’s 4X400 metres relay team crashed out of the Olympics, finishing seventh in heat 1 here Friday. The team comprising Geetha Satti, Manjeet Kaur, Chithra Soman and Mandeep Kaur clocked 3:28.83 seconds to finish ahead of last-placed Japanese team at the National Stadium.

With the relay team’s failure, India’s campaign at the Beijing Games came to an end. It was a disappointing outing for the relay team because much was expected from them as they finished seventh in the Athens Olympics in 2004. Since then, the team has been on a winning spree with titles at the Asian Games 2006, Asian Championships 2007 and a silver in the 2006 Commonwealth Games, but Friday they were nowhere near their best recorded time of 3:26.89 secs.

Russia won the race and qualified for Saturday’s final with a timing of 3:23.71 secs. The other qualifiers were Cuba (3:25.46 secs) and Great Britain (3:25.48 secs).

From heat 2, US (3:22.45 secs), Jamaica (3:22.60 secs) and Belarus (3:22.78secs) qualified for the final.
