Indian warship escorts freed vessel
June 16th, 2011 - 5:53 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, June 16 (IANS) An Indian warship Thursday began escorting Egyptian cargo ship with six Indians among its 22-man crew after it came under a fresh pirate attack, a day after being released from pirates’ clutches after a 10-month ordeal.
MV Suez faced the unsuccessful pirate attack Wednesday morning while going towards Salalah in Oman. It was released by another group of pirates only hours earlier Tuesday.
The Indian warship, INS Godavari, was rushed Wednesday evening after the government came under criticism from family members of the six Indian sailors following the fresh attack on the ship.
“Our warship caught up with MV Suez and started escorting it to Salalah,” a government official said here.
The sailors and MV Suez were released by a group of pirates Tuesday after they received a ransom of $2.1 million from the ship owners.
Before sending its own warship, India sought the help of a NATO-sponsored Combined Task Force, which sent Pakistani frigate PNS Babar to escort MV Suez.
