Indian seamers impress coach KirstenOctober 27th, 2008 - 10:21 pm ICT by IANS
New Delhi, Oct 27 (IANS) Indian seamers have rarely outshone their more famed batting line-up. But pacemen Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma with their stupendous form in the ongoing Test series against Australia have done just that. With the hosts leading 1-0, coach Gary Kirsten admitted it is an exciting time for the Indian cricket. Ishant turned out to be a revelation in the series Down Under early this year and continues to show promise, while Zaheer silenced his critics since battling his way back into the Indian ranks.
The duo has shared 21 wickets in first two Tests and has rattled the Baggy Greens with their reverse swing early in the innings. The fact that India is looking up to their seamers to win Tests at home, reflects a balanced outfit.
“They (Zaheer and Ishant) are having such impact in Test cricket. We need our fast bowlers to be strikers and they have done that. These are signs of a well balanced team which is performing in all components of the game. It is an exciting time for the Indian cricket,’ Kirsten said at the press conference Monday.
The former South African opener was all praise for young Ishant and confessed taking a liking for him the moment he saw him bowl at Perth, where India beat odds to triumph at the Australian bastion known for its its pacy wicket.
“I was impressed with Ishant form the very first minute I saw him at Perth. There is something special in Ishant I have noticed. He likes Test cricket and is ready to bowl 25 overs a day. He is a great find and an asset for Indian team. We have to manage him carefully over the years so that he can continue to play for India,” he said.
Kirsten described Zaheer as an “exceptional talent”, who has spearheaded the attack with maturity.
“He is an exceptional talent and a great performer for India. He has produced goods as and when required by his team.”
