Indian Mujahideen terrorist remanded to police custody
February 3rd, 2010 - 6:11 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Feb 3 (IANS) A city court Wednesday sent Shahzad Ahmad, an alleged terrorist of home grown terror outfit Indian Mujahideen (IM) and wanted for his role in September 2008 Delhi serial blasts, to three days police custody after he was produced before a magistrate.
Delhi Police’s Crime Branch produced Ahmad before Metropolitan Magistrate Naveen Arora, who sent him to three days police custody. Ahmad was produced before the court in connection with the murder of Special Cell inspector Mohan Chand Sharma.
In an in-chamber proceeding, Ahmad told the magistrate that he did not wish to undergo test identification parade.
Ahmad was brought to the national capital late Tuesday after he was arrested by Uttar Pradesh police’s Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in Azamgarh Monday.
Delhi Police’s Crime Branch took his custody first as it is probing the shootout at Batla House in September 2008. Two suspected Indian Mujahideen militants and Sharma were killed in the shootout that took place Sep 19, 2008, in Delhi’s Jamia Nagar locality.
Ahmad alias Pappu, who planted a bomb at the Children’s Park near India Gate Sep 13, 2008, was present in the house during the shootout. But he managed to escape after firing at the policemen. The bomb planted by him did not explode.
The Special Cell has been looking for Ahmad for his role in the Sep 13, 2008, Delhi blasts. Five synchronised blasts - two in Connuaght Place, two in Greater Kailash and one in a crowded market in Karol Bagh - went off within a span of 31 minutes, killing 26 people and injuring over 150.
He will also be prosecuted for his role in all the five blast cases.
