Dubai, March 23 (IANS) A 30-year-old Indian man drowned while swimming near Jumeriah beach here over the weekend even as the police rescued four Jordanians who were swept away by strong currents. S. Ram, who worked for the Dubai-based business group Dutco, drowned Friday evening when he went to the beach along with three friends, according to media reports.
The victim’s friends said two of them were at the beach taking photographs while Ram and another person went for a swim. A strong wave swept away Ram.
Dubai police received an alert around 7 p.m. and sent a rescue team. It did save four Jordanians who had also been swept away but not Ram.
Captain Yahya Hussain of the Dubai police told the Gulf News newspaper that the area where the incident took place was dangerous and many cases of near drowning had been reported because of the sudden impact of waves and currents.
