The car driver fled the scene after the accident.
Police, who reached the spot soon, said they found Bhagtana lying with severe injuries.
He was rushed to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Police have appealed to anyone who witnessed the accident in the pouring rain to come forward to help nab the driver.
“We’re hoping the driver will come forward. We understand it was dark, the weather was inclement, it was pouring rain,” police said.
“This driver can come forward and give us their side of the story.”
Brampton, which is the fastest growing city in Canada, has a huge concentration of Punjabi immigrant community.
In fact, South Asians constitute more than a third of its population and two Indo-Canadian MPs Gurbax Malhi and Ruby Dhalla come from this area.
The area also made headlines early this year as the family of India’s kidney kingpin Amit Kumar lived here.
