Indian diplomats seeking confirmation of Rahil Sheikh arrest

London, Nov 26 (IANS) Indian diplomats here were Wednesday seeking confirmation of reports that a key suspect in the 7/11 Mumbai train blasts has been detained in Britain.Senior police officers in Mumbai and New Delhi say Rahil Shaikh, who is wanted for his alleged involvement in the 2006 Mumbai suburban trains explosions that killed 187 people dead and wounded more than 800, has been held at a British airport following a tipoff by Interpol.

“We are aware of the media reports in India but we haven’t had any approach or communication from the British side yet,” a spokeswoman for the Indian High Commission here said.

Shaikh is accused of organising a series of seven bombings July 11, 2006, that ripped through suburban trains in the Indian financial capital.

Shaikh, a suspected activist of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), is also alleged to have helped two Pakistan nationals involved in the blasts escape from India.

The powerful bombs, in which RDX was used, were placed in first class compartments of seven suburban trains during the evening peak hours. The Anti-Terrorism Squad of the Mumbai Police has so far chargesheeted 28 people in the case.
