New Delhi, May 31 (IANS) India and the US will issue a joint statement on the interrogation of 26/11 terror attack conspirator David Headley after Indian sleuths have quizzed him in Chicago, union Home Minister P. Chidambaram said Monday.
“We have agreed with the US to issue a joint statement at the end of the visit of the National Investigation Team (to Chicago to interrogate Headley),” the home minister told reporters at a news conference here.
“Only an agreed statement will be issued later,” said Chidambaram, refusing to update reporters on whether the NIA team has begun its task of quizzing the Lashkar-e-Taiba operative.
Confirming the NIA team’s visit to Chicago, Chidambaram said: “Several news papers have reported about the visit. So it must be true.”
A four-member NIA team, comprising a deputy inspector general, two superintendents of police and one law officer left Sunday for Chicago to interrogate Headley.
India sent the sleuths following a US Justice Department communication saying that all concerned officials and the lawyers of Headley will be available during the visit of the Indian team to help them access him for interrogation.
