May 27th, 2008 - 8:49 pm ICT by admin -

New Delhi, May 27 (IANS) India will Wednesday send 28 tonnes of relief material to earthquake-hit China. “An IL-76 aircraft will Wednesday ferry 28 tonnes of relief material to Chengdu in China,” Indian Air Force (IAF) spokesman Wing Commander Mahesh Upasani said.

The IAF has been carrying out disaster relief missions to China and cyclone-hit Myanmar and has so far delivered over 277 tonnes of relief material to the two neighbouring countries.

On May 3, Cyclone Nargis struck the southeastern coast of Myanmar and caused widespread damage to life and property. On May 12, an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale struck Sichuan province of China.

For Myanmar, the IAF has air-lifted 125.5 tonnes of relief materials, including medicines, tents, ready-to-eat meals, and sent 47 personnel.

It has delivered to China relief material May 17. It has air-lifted 152 tonnes of relief material including medicines, tents, sleeping bags, blankets and prepared meals for China.
