India reviews coastal security to check LTTE
May 11th, 2009 - 9:30 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, May 11 (IANS) India Monday took stock of the coastal security to prevent the Tamil Tigers from infiltrating into the country amid the war in Sri Lanka.
Defence Minister A.K. Antony met Indian Navy Chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta here to discuss coastal security.
“The navy chief briefed the minister about the steps taken to bolster the coastal defences in south India,” a defence ministry official said. Defence Secretary Vijay Singh also attended the meeting.
The Indian Navy had expressed fears May 9 that the Tamil Tigers, cornered by Sri Lankan forces, may try to infiltrate into India through the western coast.
The Sri Lankan military has vowed to crush the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), now confined to a coastal strip in Mullaitivu district.
