Kingston (Jamaica), June 23 (IANS) India were one wicket away from victory in the first cricket Test against West Indies here Thursday.
West Indies, chasing a target of 326 runs, cracked under some fine bowling by the visitors and were 226/9 at lunch on day four at Sabina Park here.
The hosts were relying on overnight batsmen - veteran Shivnaraine Chanderpaul and flamboyant strokemaker Darren Bravo - to lead the challenge. Resuming at 131/3, West Indies again crumbled.
They lost six wickets in the session with the addition of only 95 runs.
Bravo (41) and Chanderpaul (30) added only 17 runs for the day when India got the breakthrough.
Praveen Kumar was the pick of the bowlers, dismissing both Bravo and Chanderpaul
Bravo’s leg stumps were exposed as he moved too far across and Praveen bowled him round his legs.
An over later Chanderpaul was caught by Suresh Raina at the cover off Praveen.
Wicket-keeper Carlton Baugh could not open his account and Virat Kohli caught him at leg slip off Harbhajan Singh.
West Indies were soon tottering at 150/6 and the fight was snuffed out of them.
Captain Darren Sammy (25) and Ravi Rampaul (34) added 31 runs but the latter gave his wicket to Amit Mishra to a soft dismissal.
Brendan Nash was unlucky as Mishra’s short delivery stayed low and trapped him leg before.
Ishant Sharma got the wicket of Rampaul with an unplayable bouncer that brushed his gloves and
Mahendra Singh Dhoni pulled off a one-handed catch from over his head.
