India off to decent start at President’s Cup Boxing
July 4th, 2011 - 6:41 pm ICT by IANSJakarta, July 4 (IANS) India had a decent start to their campaign at the President’s Cup International Boxing event with Gaurav Bidhuri (49kg) and Chhote Lal Yadav (56kg) winning their first round bouts.
Niraj Goyat (60kg), however, succumbed in the opening round.
Bidhuri defeated Bogi Andriano of Indonesia 14:8 in the afternoon session. He started well in the first round with the score tied at 3-all. But in the second, the 18-year-old Delhi lad launched an aggressive attack upon his opponent and raced to a 3-point lead. The final round witnessed Bidhuri dominate the proceedings.
Chhote Lal got the better of Rafli Langi of Indonesia 15:13. Yadav was leading 4:3 after the first round, but Langi came back strongly in the second and tied the scores at 8-all. In the third though, the 2010 SAF games gold medallist, with the help of some exquisite combinations, inched ahead to take a crucial two-point lead and with it the victory.
“It was a patchy start for me, but once I got into my groove, I was able to play my natural game and win the bout,” said Yadav.
Meanwhile, Goyat suffered a loss to Cen Yu of China in what was an enthralling contest. The Indian matched his opponent punch for punch and after three rounds of intense action the score was tied at 10-all. But in the end, it was the Chinese who claimed victory on individual judges’ score.
