India-Nepal border vulnerable to fake currency smuggling: Maken
November 23rd, 2010 - 11:02 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Nov 23 (IANS) The India-Nepal border remains vulnerable to smuggling of fake Indian currency notes, with more instances of international rackets coming to the notice of Indian authorities, Minister of State for Home Ajay Maken said Tuesday.
“Indo-Nepal border has also proved vulnerable to infiltration of fake Indian currency notes (FICN), with border districts being used as transit and storage points,” Maken said in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha.
He said that cases having inter-state and international linkages behind printing and circulation of fake currency have come to notice.
“Available inputs also indicate that the international dimension of FICN circulation has increased in the last few years,” said Maken.
The junior home minister said several agencies including the Central Bureau of Investigation, the Reserve Bank of India and finance ministry were working in tandem to curb the problem.
“The CBI has been declared as the nodal agency for coordination with the states, the directorate general of revenue intelligence has been nominated as the lead intelligence agency for this purpose,” he said.
