Sydney, Aug 7 (IANS) India were heading for a big victory over New Zealand in the Emerging Players Cricket Tournament in Brisbane Sunday.

After declaring their first innings at 404 for six wickets, India dismissed New Zealand for 272 and forced them to follow on. They claimed three second-innings wickets for 48 at stumps on the second day of the three-day match at Townsville. New Zealand were still 84 runs in arrears.

At sumps, Daniel Flynn (24) and Dean Brownlie (9) were at the crease.

Both Flynn, New Zealand Test batsman, and Brownlie were the chief contributors in the New Zealand first-innings, scoring fifties.

Flynn scored a painstaking 52 off 109 balls after New Zealand A resumed at their overnight 24 for two while Brownlie’s 55 (103 balls) came in a similar fashion. Luke Woodcock is the only other batsman to defy the Indian attack, scoring 48.

Left-arm spinners Syyed Iqbal Abdullah and Bhargav Bhatt claimed three wickets each while opening bowler Jaydev Unadkat chipped in with two wickets.

Following on, New Zealand openers Robert Nicol and Brad Wilson were dismissed without scoring by Vinay Kumar and Unadkat, and Bhatt sent back international Neil Broom, who cracked 197 against Australia in the opening game.

On the opening day, India recovered from a poor start to post a big score thanks to Manoj Tiwari’s strokeful 188 and Manish Pandey’s 96 for their 160-run fifth-wicket stand.

India had a terrible start after being put in, losing their openers for only 22 runs on the board, but Manoj and Saurabh Tiwary (42) steadied the innings with a century partnership.
