India-Bangladesh border guards to meet over murder attempt
August 19th, 2011 - 6:22 pm ICT by IANSShillong, Aug 19 (IANS) Indian and Bangladeshi border guards will meet Saturday after armed Bangladeshi nationals attempted to murder an Indian villager at Borhil area on the southern tip of Meghalaya near the Bangladesh border, an official said Friday.
“Three Bangladeshi nationals armed with sharp weapons hacked the shoulder of Nikes Khongdup inside Indian territory while he was fishing in the Borhil river Thursday,” Superintendent of Police M. Kharkrang told IANS.
Kongdup is critically injured and admitted to a hospital, the police official said. Borhil village is about 100 km from here.
“We have approached the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) and asked them to take action against the three people,” BSF spokesman Ravi Gandhi said, adding that a flag meeting will be held with them Saturday.
Meghalaya Home Minister H.D.R. Lyngdoh said the government has sent a police team along with an additional district magistrate to the border village to take stock of the situation.
A BSF official claimed that Thursday’s attack was in retaliation to an attack by India’s Village Defence Party Aug 12 in which two Bangladeshi nationals were killed.
Meghalaya shares a 443-km border with Bangladesh, part of which is porous, hilly and unfenced and prone to frequent infiltration.
