India backs re-election of Ban Ki-moon as UN chief
June 7th, 2011 - 11:22 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, June 7 (IANS) India Tuesday said it supports the re-election of United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon for a second term.
The Asian Group at the UN met in New York Monday and endorsed by acclamation the candidature of Ban for a second term, external affairs ministry spokesperson Vishnu Prakash said here. Ban assumed office Jan 1, 2007 for a five-year term.
India’s support was conveyed by its Acting Permanent Representative Manjeev Singh Puri.
“The chair of the Asian Group is writing to the president of the General Assembly and the president of the Security Council, informing them of the decision of the group,” Prakash said.
Last week, Ban named India diplomat Atul Khare to spearhead efforts to implement a reform agenda aimed at improving the efficiency of the 192-nation global body.
