India adds 8.12 million GSM subscribers in December
January 12th, 2009 - 10:34 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Jan 12 (IANS) India’s GSM mobile phone operators maintained their fast paced network expansion, adding 8.12 million new subscribers in December, a statement issued here said Monday. The total base of GSM subscribers has now crossed the 250 million-mark and stands at 257.85 million as on Dec 31, the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) said in a statement.
The total subscriber base in all the four metros combined stood at 37 million in December, an increase of 2.30 percent from 36 million in the month before, the statement said.
In the telecom circle ‘A’ that comprises of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu the GSM mobile subscribers rose 3.12 percent from 89 million in November to 92 million in December.
In category ‘B’ telecom service area comprising of Kerala, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh (West), Uttar Pradesh (East), Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal and Andaman and Nicobar islands; a 3.56 percent increase was noted in the subscriber figure.
The subscriber base stood at 95 million in December as compared to 92 million in the month before, COAI said.
There was a 3.83 percent increase in the GSM subscriber base in circle ‘C’ from 31 million in November to 32 million in December.
Circle ‘C’ comprises of Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Orissa, Assam, northeast and Jammu and Kashmir.
