Illegal mining: Andhra woman official moves Supreme Court
January 4th, 2012 - 10:10 pm ICT by IANSHyderabad, Jan 4 (IANS) Indian Administrative Service (IAS) official Y. Srilakshmi Wednesday moved the Supreme Court, challenging the cancellation of her bail by Andhra Pradesh High Court on a charge of involvement in an illegal mining racket.
While cancelling the bail, the high court had Monday directed her to surrender in the special court for Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) cases before Friday.
The official’s petition is likely to come up for hearing in the Supreme Court Thursday.
Meanwhile, the CBI has also filed a caveat in the Supreme Court, opposing her petition.
CBI Joint Director V.V. Lakshminarayana told reporters that a supplementary chargesheet in the case would be filed in 20 days. He said the process to seek the central government’s permission for filing a chargesheet against Srilakshmi was on.
The high court had Monday passed the orders on a petition by CBI, challenging the special court’s Dec 2 order granting bail to Srilakshmi.
The investigating agency had argued that the official could influence the investigations.
Former Karnataka minister G. Janardhana Reddy, his brother-in-law B.V. Srinivasa Reddy and V.D. Rajagopal, the former vice chairman and managing director of the state-owned Andhra Pradesh Mineral Development Corporation (APMDC) are currently lodged in Chanchalguda Central Jail on the charge of involvement in illegal mining that caused massive losses to the exchequer.
She was the family welfare commissioner at the time of her arrest by the CBI Nov 28.
The federal agency questioned her for three days with regard to the alleged favours shown by her in granting iron ore mining leases to Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC), owned by Janardhana Reddy.
The 1988-batch IAS officer was industries secretary in the Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy government when OMC was granted leases for iron ore mining in Anantapur district.
