Illegal arms unit unearthed in Bengal, weapons seized
April 25th, 2011 - 8:42 pm ICT by IANSKolkata, April 25 (IANS) An illegal arms manufacturing factory was unearthed in West Bengal’s South 24-Parganas district and a huge cache of arms and ammunitions was seized, a senior police official said.
“The arms manufacturing unit was found in a raid at the house of one Hassan Ali in Mathurapur area. We recovered 10 firearms, 24 cartridges, a huge quantity of raw material and three weapon making machines from the house,” Additional Police Superintendent (Industrial) Murli Dhar said.
Hassan Ali escaped before the police arrived, he said.
According to Dhar, so far 211 firearms and 394 rounds of cartridges have been recovered from the district and 201 people arrested for carrying illegal firearms.
The raid came two days before the assembly election in the district.
The South 24-Parganas district will go to polls Wednesday.
