Idol smugglers arrested
July 8th, 2009 - 8:55 pm ICT by IANSLucknow, July 8 (IANS) Four members of a gang involved in smuggling ancient temple idols were arrested in Uttar Pradesh with Rs.5 crore worth of booty, police said Wednesday.
The arrests took place in Kushinagar in Kaushambhi district, about 300 km from Lucknow.
“Acting on a tip-off, we arrested them in Kokhraj locality with 13 ancient ashtadhatu (eight-metal) idols of Lord Rama, Buddha and Krishna,” district police chief R.K. Bharadwaj told IANS.
According to the police, the four used to operate in Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring places including Delhi and Bihar.
