June 2nd, 2011 - 9:29 pm ICT by IANSAizawl, June 2 (IANS) The Indian Air Force (IAF) will install a surveillance radar and station fighter aircraft in mountainous Mizoram, bordering Myanmar and Bangladesh, an official release said Thursday.
The issue came up in a meeting between Eastern Air Command chief Air Marshal K.K. Nohwar and Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla in Aizawl.
“The IAF Eastern Air Command chief informed Lal Thanhawla that the surveillance radar would be commissioned at Zokhawtlang in southern Mizoram,” the release said.
“Schools, canteen, recreation centres, amusement parks and many more amenities would be developed at the radar site and those can be useful of local people,” it added.
Nohwar also said that the IAF would also position at least four jet combat aircraft at Lengpui airport, 15 km north of Aizawl, for which suitable land would be required to the west of the runway for construction of hangars, each 35 by 25 metres in size.
The chief minister has confirmed that no hurdles would be made by the Mizoram government in this venture and it would extend all possible help to the IAF in its proposed projects.
“The Mizoram government would leave no stone unturned in its efforts towards strengthening of the Indian defence in bordering Mizoram, if at all it can play a role, in the defence sector,” the official release quoted Lal Thanhawla as saying.
Nohwar, who is now touring several northeastern states, met Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and Chief Secretary S.K. Panda in Agartala Wednesday and discussed “some strategic matters”, a Tripura government release said.
