New Delhi, July 12 (IANS) Amid a continuing row over the timing of India’s decision to approach the IAEA for a safeguards pact, National Security Advisor M.K. Narayanan Saturday said the government had initialled it Monday. “India’s envoy to IAEA initialled the text of the safeguards pact with the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) negotiator July 7,” Narayanan said at a media briefing here.

The 35-member IAEA board of governors was moved Tuesday and asked to circulate the text of the agreement for its approval, he said.

The government unveiled the text Thursday.

Narayanan’s remarks acquire significance in the context of External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s assurance Monday that the government would approach the IAEA only after securing a trust vote in parliament. This is slated for July 22 at the end of a two-day special session of parliament.
